Minga. For the community.
Stephen Jon Thompson & Hotel Goodbye x Earth Legacy
MINGA. When sitting to think of the build your websites, what came to mind was this word, this concept, of MINGA. When I was travelling through Ecuador meeting the community there I came across this idea, and I have been in love with it ever since. Talking with you, what your purpose, your mission, what you want to build, how you live your life, this idea of Minga immediately became the backbone of how I thought about building your 2 websites. Minga is a word that describes a kind of communal work, where members all the members of the community come together to help the one, that in turn, helps everyone. Everyone comes together to help each other when needed in a task that not only benefits the one but the entire group. We are strongest when we are in a community. This is why it was the first thing that I thought of when thinking about your projects. And this is the foundational level that we build on.
As is the way of Earth Legacy when we approach to work, we come from a place of indigenous knowledge systems, local lore, and connection to country, the land, the people, all the human and non-human entities in a landscape. This initial thought of Minga inspired the investigation and conversation into native culture from the traditional lands of Northern & Southern Piute / Western Shoshone / Washoe. These native lands come from where the book is based in Nevada. I started to talk some story and lore from that place, and immediately found similar values of cooperation, mutual support and coming together for the benefit of the one for the benefit of the all. Of course they don’t use the term minga, there is actually not a word for ‘community’, for their ways are relational context meanings, always linked together with family, and kinship ties, in what we then call back home a relational economy, because we are all one extended family. We all belong to the one people, one fire, that intercontinental community that share common lore. Family is not only a pillar of your story, but the reason you do what you do. And this should be a prominent part of the site, both in not only content of what is being shared for the Why you do what you do, but the How, the way you talk to people through this digital space and build that relation as an extension of your family, coming together in minga, in tabeno’a.
These are unspoken, interwoven components of concepts that enrich the next stages, for it is these ideas are the foundations of the rest of the work, the building blocks of value that the rest of the copy, and the design come, that roadmap to how we get from here, to what are we are going to create – and in a greater affect the minga we step up to provide for support of the greater community, by sharing this story, your story, with the world.
Ideas to discuss.
Talking points July4th Meeting
The idea with the website for both yourself and for the book is to create a space where people can experience a glimpse into the product (the book, and you and your knowledge and community connections), but to experience that, to feel it, and be welcomed into that relation with you and also those you are connected with.
This website(s) is just another tool in being able to create a community base, a place for people to connect and be inspired, to bring people together around your work, and the message you send.
Design wise, I would come at it from both that connection to family, which is represented in the colors and tones, but also, to reflect your work in the digital and technology space, incorporate some elements that homage that part of your life, not in a flashy, over the top way, subtle, nice transition from page to page perhaps, nothing showy, again just a subconscious indicator of who you are, and what makes up your world. There is a humble nature to you, how you exist within the world, and I believe that should be reflected in that design element too.
The language used in the copy, the color scheme ( coming from the Book cover. I would be utilizing the earth tones and similar color palete used by piute artworks and textiles that is a nod to the place the book comes from, I would suggest a strong font, not a serif, and reflect the connected nature of both you to your immediate, and extended family. For good story is always rooted in place. )
The Timeframe: This is a tight turnaround, with a mid-September launch of the book, which means you would ideally want at least a month of promotion and an active complete site that can begin to generate hype, create a mailing list, share the events and appearances for the book tour, which means I will need to get the site ready to beta with you by August.
Given the tight turnaround of the build, I would have to prioritize this and come to the front of the workload in order to get it done in the time frame. With that in mind, as an achievable Phase this is some notes to discuss in our conversation.
Ideas To Include:
Additional Thoughts of how to expand the sites to best reflect You, your mission, purpose, and story.
SJT.com
-move website from the Squarespace to a WordPress backend. This will allow for expansion with plugins for better connection with community down the road, events, shop, donations, community links. With this in mind, I would use Elementor as the front end builder, which after the main builds are done things can be maintained and easily altered with a front end editor when required.
- a video introduction, simple, in front of your computer as a Welcome to that space, and to introduce yourself to the viewer. This way when they read the Bio, the Extended Bio, and Your Story on the website, they read in your voice, your tone, your warmth, and have that connection point that is important in community building.
- Events: a list of all the events that are upcoming, from speaking engagements to book signings and the tour that will go with that.
- Donation: adding a donation page to your foundation that you sit on the board of / a donation to a cause that you are currently supporting. this can integrate with an extended community bringing NGO and nonprofit projects and initiatives that you work with a place on your site, and starting that conversation by linking to them from this platform.
- layout templates for your blog posts. so you can update these yourself if you like, build out easily implementable front-end builders that you can do this yourself, or an easy task if you get someone on it.
Hotel Goodbyes.com
- Recording the introduction / Chapter One to introduce the readers
-video introduction from the author. introducing yourself, a short thankyou / a why - a good place to write the Why story that came from your son.
-written, video, and audio reviews, only short, from important people/publications (add to the community importance and connection between the extended community of readers). the inclusion of a selfie video, or simple audio notes from the book will add another level of the community connection, adds levels of authenticity to it - anyone can write reviews and say Mr Morgan said it, but the voices add another level of depth and reiterate the community you have and are building.
- the book launch event, where, when and how to visit. this page will later become a page about the event itself once done, but before then, even a short intro of looking forward to it, welcoming people, wanting to come, wanting to promote, and would love to talk with you. Again, going with the community and connection.)
- Donation: link back to SJT donate page to support the causes you do, or, if you have an initiative or project that associates with the book, this could be the place to expand onto this.
